On the 6th April in 1915 George William Starbuck was appointed Lance
Corporal while in the field.
On the 28th May George was promoted to paid rank while in the field.
On the 24th May it had been recorded that George was suffering from cardiac
disease.
On the 20th June he reported for duty in the field

A REPORT WAS SENT TO THE H.Q. BY THE OFFICER IN CHARGE WHERE
GEORGE WILLIAM STARBUCK AND HIS REGIMENT WERE DURING THE DAYS
LEADING UP TO HIS DEATH

11TH JULY 1915 - THE TRENCHES AROUND SANCTUARY WOOD,
NR.BUSSEBOOM, YPRES

Marched via Busserboom and Kruisstraat to trenches East of Zillebeke, taking
over trenches 49, 50, A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5 from the 5th Leicesters. Halt for
2 hours on way - distance 15 miles - All men in trenches, including some in
support trenches close up.

ON THAT DAY the 11th July it was reported that George was suffering from
Rheumatism while in the field and he was sent to the Division Rest Station.

On the 17th George was admitted to the Ambulance train. He had been
passed down the line as suffering from nephritis and he complained of pain in
his left side and had slight tenderness in the epigastric region.

During the afternoon of the 20th July a doctor was called to see the patient
but nothing definite was discoverd. Later as he was reading and taking a
normal tea he cried out and collapsed. Restoration was attempted but had no
effect.

His records state that he died of wounds possibly caused by exposure to gas.
however that was erroneous as an autopsy which was carried out at Le Have
Hospital showed that he had died due to a condition of the left ventricle of the
Heart.
